AI SDR
An AI SDR is software that uses AI models to carry out sales development tasks such as researching prospects, writing personalized outreach, sending sequences and handling or routing replies.
Also called: AI sales development representative, AI BDR
Why it matters
A human sales development representative spends much of the day on research, list building and first touches. An AI SDR automates parts of that work: it can pull data on an account, draft a message that references a real signal, send it by email or LinkedIn and sort the replies. Setups range from fully autonomous agents to assistants that draft messages for a person to approve.
Results depend on the inputs. An AI SDR fed a weak list or generic prompts can send large volumes of irrelevant messages, which can damage sender reputation and the brand. Many teams keep a human in the loop for targeting, message review and live conversations. An AI SDR also differs from a basic sequencer, which sends fixed templates on a schedule without researching or writing anything.
Example
A company that sells logistics software sets up an AI SDR to watch for companies opening new warehouses. When one appears, the tool finds the head of operations, reads recent news about the expansion and drafts a short email that mentions it. A human SDR reviews each draft before it is sent, and the tool books a meeting when a prospect replies with interest.
