AI Agent

An AI agent is software built on a large language model that takes a goal, decides on the steps, calls tools such as search, APIs or databases, and acts on the results.

Also called: autonomous agent, LLM agent

Why it matters

A chatbot answers a single prompt. An agent works in a loop: it plans, calls a tool, reads the output, and decides what to do next until the task is done or it needs a human. In go-to-market work, that means an agent can research an account, pull data from several sources, write a draft and log the result without a person copying between tabs.

Agents are only as reliable as the tools, data and instructions they are given. Teams usually keep a human approval step before anything is sent to a prospect or written to the CRM. An agent differs from a fixed automation, such as a Zapier flow, because it chooses its own path at run time instead of following a predefined sequence.

Example

A sales team gives an AI agent a list of 50 target accounts. For each one, the agent searches the company website and recent news, checks the CRM for past conversations, identifies two likely buyers, and writes a short research brief with a suggested first line. A rep reviews each brief before using it in outreach.
