Agentic Workflow

An agentic workflow is a multi-step process where one or more AI agents plan, call tools, check results and make decisions within a defined structure to complete a business task.

Also called: agentic automation

Why it matters

Simple automations follow fixed rules: when a form is submitted, create a record. Agentic workflows add judgment at specific steps, such as reading a company's website to decide if it fits the ideal customer profile, or choosing which data source to try next. The structure keeps the work predictable, while the agent handles steps that need reading and reasoning.

A well-built agentic workflow defines clear inputs and outputs for each step, logs every decision with its reasoning, and places human review where mistakes are costly, such as before emails are sent or CRM records change. It differs from a single AI agent working freely, because the workflow limits each agent to a narrow task and passes results between steps.

Example

A company builds an agentic workflow for new inbound signups. Step one enriches the company domain. Step two has an agent read the homepage and judge fit against the ideal customer profile, with a reason. Step three finds the likely buyer. Step four drafts a reply for a rep to approve. Each output is saved to the CRM.
