GTM Engineering
GTM engineering is the discipline of building automated go-to-market systems with code, APIs and AI, covering data sourcing, enrichment, buying signals, outreach sequencing and CRM sync.
Also called: go-to-market engineering, GTM engineer
Why it matters
Modern outbound and account-based programs rely on many tools: data providers, enrichment services, scrapers, AI models, sequencers and the CRM. A GTM engineer connects them into repeatable pipelines, so target lists build themselves, signals trigger outreach and results flow back into reporting. The work replaces manual list building and copy-paste with systems the team can run and audit.
GTM engineering overlaps with RevOps and sales operations but has a different center. RevOps owns process, reporting and the CRM as a system of record. A GTM engineer builds the data and automation workflows that create pipeline, often writing scripts and using APIs directly instead of relying only on point-and-click tools. In small teams, one person may do both.
Example
A software company wants to contact accounts soon after they post a job for a data engineer. A GTM engineer writes a daily job that collects new postings, matches them to target accounts, enriches the hiring manager's contact details, asks an AI model to judge fit from the company description, and adds approved contacts to a sequence and the CRM.
Questions people ask
What does a GTM engineer do?
A GTM engineer builds the systems that find, qualify and reach buyers: data sourcing and enrichment, signal tracking, scoring, outreach sequencing and CRM sync, using APIs, automation tools, scripts and AI. The role sits between sales, marketing and RevOps and turns their processes into working workflows.
Can GTM engineering be done without coding?
Partly. Many workflows can be built in no-code automation and enrichment tools. Work that calls APIs directly, processes large lists or uses AI agents usually needs some scripting, and AI coding tools now write much of that code, though someone still has to check what it does.
