Data Enrichment
Data enrichment is the process of adding missing or updated information to existing records, such as emails, phone numbers, job titles, company size or technology, by matching them against external data sources.
Also called: contact enrichment, lead enrichment, company enrichment
Why it matters
A list often starts with a name and a company, or just a domain. Enrichment fills in what is needed to act: a verified work email, a current title, headcount, industry, funding, tech stack and recent news. Sources include data providers, company websites, LinkedIn profiles and public records. Each provider covers some regions and segments better than others.
Enrichment differs from list building, which finds new records, and from data cleansing, which fixes or removes bad ones, although the three usually run together. Data decays as people change jobs and companies change, so enrichment is repeated before campaigns rather than done once. Keeping the full raw response from each source beside the field it fills makes later audits and reuse easier.
Example
A sales team exports 200 webinar registrants who gave only a name and a work email. An enrichment step matches each email to a person and a company record, then adds title, seniority, company size, industry and LinkedIn URL. The team filters out registrants who fall outside its ideal customer profile and routes the remaining contacts to the right reps.
Questions people ask
What is an example of data enrichment?
A list that holds only company names and contact names is matched against data sources to add each company's domain, headcount and description, and each contact's current title and verified work email, so the list can be segmented and contacted.
What is the best tool for data enrichment?
There is no single best tool: providers differ in coverage by country, company size and role, and each is wrong in its own way. Many teams query several providers in sequence (waterfall enrichment) and verify the results. Our data enrichment playbook lists the tools we use and why.
