Email Finder

An email finder is a tool that returns a person's likely work email address from inputs such as their name, company domain or LinkedIn profile.

Also called: email lookup, email discovery tool

Why it matters

Outbound teams usually start with names and companies, not email addresses. An email finder fills that gap by checking provider databases, known email patterns at the company (such as first.last@domain.com) and public sources, then returning an address with a confidence level. Without one, reps spend time guessing addresses or skip prospects they cannot reach.

An email finder is not the same as email verification. A finder produces a candidate address. Verification checks whether that address can receive mail. Most teams run both, because a guessed address that bounces hurts sender reputation. Some teams query several finders in sequence, called waterfall enrichment, to raise the share of contacts with a usable email.

Example

An SDR has a list of 300 operations managers with names and company domains but no emails. She runs the list through an email finder, which returns an address for most rows with a confidence score. She then sends those addresses to a verification tool and only uploads the ones marked valid to her sequencing tool.

Questions people ask

How does the email finder work?

An email finder takes inputs such as a name and company domain or a LinkedIn profile, then looks the person up in its own database or tests likely address patterns against the domain's mail server. Good finders report whether an address was verified, is a catch-all or is only a guess.
