Cold Email
Cold email is an unsolicited, individually addressed email sent to a potential buyer who has no prior relationship with the sender, usually to start a sales conversation.
Also called: cold outreach email, outbound email
Why it matters
Cold email lets a company reach specific buyers at specific accounts without waiting for them to find it. It works best when the list is tightly targeted, the message is relevant to a real situation at the account, and the ask is small. It is usually part of a sequence of a few follow-ups and often runs alongside LinkedIn and phone outreach.
Cold email differs from spam because it is addressed to a relevant individual, sent in modest volume, and includes a way to opt out. It depends on technical setup: authenticated domains with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, warmed-up mailboxes, verified addresses and low bounce rates. Senders must also follow the laws that apply to them and to recipients, such as CAN-SPAM or GDPR.
Example
A company selling warehouse software sees that a distributor just opened a second facility. An SDR sends the operations director a short email that mentions the new site, names one problem that often comes with running two warehouses, and asks if a short comparison would be useful. Two follow-ups are scheduled if there is no reply.
Questions people ask
Is cold email still effective in 2026?
It can be, when the list is verified and relevant, the sending setup is sound and the message is short and written for the recipient. Poor lists and broken setups fail quietly through bounces and spam folders. Our cold email playbook covers the setup and checks we use.
