Buying Signals

Buying signals are observable events or behaviors that suggest a company or person may need a product soon, such as a funding round, a new executive, a relevant job posting or a pricing page visit.

Also called: buyer signals, purchase signals, trigger events

Why it matters

Signals give outbound a reason and a moment. Instead of working through a static list, teams watch for change: a company raising money, hiring for a role the product supports, adopting or dropping a tool, entering a new market, or a leader engaging with posts about the problem. Each signal points to who to contact, when to contact them and what to say.

Signals vary in strength. A demo request is explicit, while a job posting is indirect and needs interpretation. Buying signals are the broad category; intent data is one type within it, based on research behavior. Teams often combine several signals with ICP fit before acting, because a single weak signal on its own is a thin reason for outreach.

Example

A company that sells sales onboarding software monitors job boards for companies hiring five or more account executives at once. When a fintech firm posts six openings and its new VP of Sales shares a post about building the team, the account is flagged. An SDR writes to the VP about ramping new hires quickly and references the open roles.

Questions people ask

What are some examples of buying signals?

A relevant job posting, a funding round, a new executive in the buying function, adopting or dropping a technology, attending a related event, engaging with a competitor's content, and visits to your pricing page. One signal alone is weak; several on the same account are stronger.

How to identify buying signals?

Decide which events mean an account may need your product, then watch the sources where those events appear: job boards for hiring, technology data for installs, news for funding and leadership changes, and social platforms for engagement. Check each signal against the account's fit before acting on it.
