Social Listening

Social listening is the practice of monitoring social platforms and online communities for mentions of a brand, competitor, topic or keyword, then analyzing them to guide marketing and sales actions.

Also called: social media listening

Why it matters

In B2B, social listening goes beyond tracking brand sentiment. Teams watch LinkedIn posts and comments, Reddit threads and review sites for moments that suggest a need: someone asking for tool recommendations, a leader announcing a new initiative, or engagement with a competitor's post. Each of these can become a timely and relevant reason to reach out.

Social monitoring is the narrower task of logging mentions and replying to them; social listening adds analysis of the patterns behind them. It is one input into buying signals, next to hiring, funding and website visits. Many buyers do not post their problems in public, so teams also watch what people engage with and ask about, not only complaints.

Example

A company that sells data privacy software tracks LinkedIn posts that mention a new privacy regulation. A compliance director comments on one of them, asking how others are preparing. The listening tool flags the comment, the account owner reviews the director's profile and company, then sends a short message that references the question and offers a checklist the team already wrote.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT do social listening?

Not on its own. A chat assistant does not continuously monitor social platforms. Social listening needs a tool that captures posts and engagement as they happen; a language model is then useful for reading and classifying what was captured, which is how we use one.

What is an example of social listening?

A B2B company tracks LinkedIn posts that mention an upcoming industry event and the problem its product solves. Each post author is checked for job title and employer, and the qualified ones are added to an outreach list that never mentions the post itself.
