Workflow Automation

Workflow automation is the use of software to run a sequence of business tasks automatically, moving data and triggering actions between tools based on rules, without manual work at each step.

Also called: process automation, sales workflow automation

Why it matters

Go-to-market teams repeat many small steps: moving a new lead into the CRM, enriching it, scoring it, assigning it, alerting a rep and logging the result. Automating those steps removes delays and copy-paste errors, frees people for work that needs judgment and makes the process run the same way every time.

Workflows can be built in dedicated automation platforms, inside CRMs and marketing tools, or in code. Newer approaches add AI agents to steps that need judgment, such as classifying a reply or researching an account. Every workflow needs clear inputs, error handling and an owner, because an automated mistake repeats at scale.

Example

When a demo form is submitted, a workflow checks whether the company already exists in the CRM, enriches the record with headcount and industry, scores the lead, assigns it to the right account executive, posts an alert in the sales channel and sends the lead a booking link, all within a minute.

Questions people ask

Is sales workflow automation worth it for a small sales team?

Often yes, because a small team has the least spare time for manual steps. Start with the repetitive steps that slow follow-up or cause errors, such as entering leads, assigning them and logging activity. Automate one workflow at a time and keep a person checking the output at first.
