How to get an API key

RocketReach uses API key. The steps below follow RocketReach's own docs.

Create a RocketReach account. API access starts on the Essentials (email only) plan.
Account Settings > API (rocketreach.co/account) > Generate New API Key. Free accounts get 3 lookups; heavy API use needs a paid plan.
Send it with every request: header Api-Key: <key>; the api_key query parameter still works for older clients but is deprecated. MCP uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE instead.
Make a first call: People search by criteria (title, employer, location, skills, signals). Keep the key in an environment variable, never in the command.

Where it falls short

Synchronous single-call enrichment in a tight loop: person lookups are async (status progress/searching) and need polling or a webhook
Paging deep into large searches: max 10,000 results per query
Small batches through bulk lookup: legacy bulk needs at least 10 lookups per batch
Teams on Essentials/Pro/Ultimate who want Universal Credits: the Universal endpoints return 403 for those plans

Worth knowing

Universal endpoints (/universal/*) and Universal Credits are not available on Essentials, Pro or Ultimate; those plans must use the legacy endpoints, and using reveal_* params without access returns 403.
Universal person lookup needs at least one reveal_* flag or it returns nothing.
Person lookups are async: the first response can be status progress/searching. Poll checkStatus or use a webhook. return_cached_emails still defaults to true in the live docs, so first-response emails can be cached rather than freshly verified.
start is a 1-based result offset (max 10,000), not a page number; page_size max 100.
Out of lookup credits returns 403 with a detail message, not 402. Only email verify returns 402 (error_code 202, credit_type field).
