Lookalike Audience

A lookalike audience is a group of people or companies that an advertising platform builds to resemble a seed list a business provides, such as current customers or recent leads.

Also called: lookalike audiences, similar audiences

Why it matters

Lookalike audiences help a company reach new prospects who share traits with people who already bought or engaged. Instead of guessing targeting settings, the platform finds patterns in the seed list and looks for similar users. This can widen reach once a narrow, hand-built audience is exhausted.

Results depend on the seed. A list of best-fit customers usually produces a more useful audience than a list of everyone who ever filled in a form. Each platform builds lookalikes with its own data and settings, and the audience is a black box, so teams check the quality of the leads and accounts it brings in before scaling spend.

Example

A company exports a list of its 200 best customers and uploads it to an ad platform as a seed. The platform creates a lookalike audience, and the company runs a guide download campaign to it. The team then checks how many of the resulting leads match its ideal customer profile before raising the budget.
