Win Rate

Win rate is the percentage of sales opportunities that end in a closed won deal, usually calculated as deals won divided by all deals that were closed, won or lost, in a period.

Also called: sales win rate, close rate, win-loss analysis

Why it matters

Win rate shows how well a team turns qualified opportunities into customers. Together with pipeline size and average deal value, it tells leaders how much pipeline they need to reach a revenue target. A falling win rate can signal weaker qualification, a new competitor or a pricing problem.

The definition matters. Some teams count only opportunities that reached a certain stage, while others include every opportunity created, and these give very different numbers. Many teams pair the figure with win-loss analysis, reviewing why deals were won or lost, often by interviewing buyers, to find what to change.

Example

In one quarter a sales team closes 80 opportunities: 20 won and 60 lost, a win rate of 25 percent. A win-loss review shows that most losses came from deals where the economic buyer never joined a call. The team adds a rule that a deal cannot reach the proposal stage until that buyer has been met.
