GTM Glossary

Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search phrases that each get relatively few searches but signal a clearer need than short, broad terms.

Also called: long tail keywords

Why it matters

Broad terms attract large audiences with mixed intent and are hard to rank for. Together, many long-tail phrases can bring in more qualified visitors than one popular head term.

Long-tail keywords suit B2B companies because buyers often search for a specific problem, integration, comparison or use case. They also match how people ask questions to AI assistants and voice search. Teams find them in search suggestions, People Also Ask questions, sales call notes and support tickets.

Example

A company selling inventory software struggles to rank for the phrase inventory software. It writes pages for narrower phrases such as inventory software for multi-location bakeries and how to sync inventory between two warehouses. Each page gets modest traffic, but visitors from those pages request demos at a higher rate.
