Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a free, useful resource, such as a guide, template, checklist, tool or report, offered in exchange for a prospect's contact details or another small commitment.
Also called: gated content, content offer
Why it matters
A lead magnet turns attention into a known contact. Someone reads a post or ad, wants the resource and shares an email address, or comments, to receive it. Effective lead magnets solve one specific problem for the target persona quickly, and the choice of resource also shows what that person cares about. Downloads can then feed lead scoring and nurture sequences.
On LinkedIn, a common pattern is to offer the resource in a post, ask readers to comment and send it by direct message. A lead magnet differs from general demand generation content, which is usually free and ungated. Gating captures data but adds friction, so teams weigh contact capture against reach. A download alone does not mean the person is ready to buy.
Example
A company that sells sales forecasting software publishes a spreadsheet template for building a quarterly forecast. It promotes the template in a LinkedIn post and on its blog, where readers enter a work email to get it. Each download goes into the CRM tagged with the template name, and contacts that match the target persona receive a short follow up sequence.
