# Spintax

Spintax (spin syntax) is a text format that lists alternative words or phrases inside curly braces, separated by pipes, such as {Hi|Hello}, so software can produce a different version of a message for each recipient.

Also called: spin syntax, spun text

## Why it matters

A sending tool reads each spintax block and picks one option per message. A line such as {Hi|Hello|Hey} {there|team} can produce six combinations. Senders use it so a large batch of cold emails does not carry identical text in every message. Blocks can be nested, and many tools combine spintax with merge fields such as the recipient's first name.

Spintax changes wording only; it does not make a message more relevant. Poorly written options can create awkward or ungrammatical sentences, and an unresolved brace that slips through looks broken to the reader. For that reason some senders resolve every variation before upload, so each recipient's final text can be reviewed exactly as it will be sent. Spintax is distinct from personalization, which uses facts about the recipient.

## Example

A sender writes the opening line {Hi|Hello} Sam, I {noticed|saw} your team is hiring for data roles. With two choices in each block, the line has four possible versions. Before upload, the team expands the line into plain text for every contact and reads through the results, so no recipient receives a message with a stray brace or pipe.
