GTM Glossary

# First-Party Data

First-party data is information a company collects directly from its own audience, customers and channels, such as website activity, form fills, product usage, CRM records and email engagement.

Also called: 1st party data

## Why it matters

First-party data is usually the most accurate and relevant data a company has, because it describes real interactions with its own brand and product. It powers lead scoring, personalization, retargeting audiences, customer success and attribution.

It is often compared with second-party data, which is another organization's first-party data shared through a partnership, and third-party data, which is collected by outside providers across many sources and sold or licensed.

## Example

A company combines its own data on which accounts visited its pricing page, which contacts opened its last three emails and which customers use a particular feature. It uses that combined view to decide which accounts sales should call this week and which customers might be ready for an upgrade.

## Questions people ask

### What is the difference between first-party data and third-party data?

First-party data is collected by a company directly from its own audience and customers, such as its website, product and CRM. Third-party data is collected by an outside provider across many sources, then sold or licensed to companies that have no direct relationship with the people or companies it describes.

### What is 1st party, 2nd party, and 3rd party data?

First-party data is what you collect yourself from your own channels. Second-party data is another organization's first-party data shared with you through a direct partnership. Third-party data is gathered by outside providers from many sources and sold or licensed to many buyers.
