GTM Glossary

# Buyer Persona

A buyer persona is a semi-fictional profile of a person who buys or influences the purchase of a product, describing their role, goals, problems, decision criteria and the sources they trust.

Also called: customer persona, buyer profile

## Why it matters

An ideal customer profile describes the company to target, while a buyer persona describes the people inside it. One account can hold several personas, such as an economic buyer who signs, a technical evaluator and an end user. Each needs a different message, so personas shape job title filters, outreach copy, content topics and the order in which contacts are engaged.

Useful personas come from evidence: call recordings, won and lost deals, customer interviews and the profiles of people who actually bought. Personas built from guesses tend to describe the seller's hopes rather than the buyer's reality. In outbound, a persona turns into concrete filters (titles, seniority, department) plus the two or three problems a message should open with.

## Example

A company that sells cloud security software defines two personas. The first is a chief information security officer who reports risk to the board and approves budget. The second is a cloud platform engineer who cares about alert noise and setup time. Outreach to the first opens with audit readiness, while outreach to the second opens with a short technical walkthrough.

## Questions people ask

### ICP vs. Buyer Persona: What's the Difference?

An ideal customer profile describes the type of company that is the best fit for your product. A buyer persona describes the people inside those companies who buy or influence the purchase: their role, goals and concerns. Teams usually define the ICP first, then the personas within it.
